These sites were originally developed as a venue for interacting, dating and also for business network. But things have changed. These sites today provide an open platform for aggressive and often vulgar exhibition of sexual desires and appetites.
A few samples profiles from a such sites are mentioned below..
25 years old Rahul Khanna writes, "Love is my passion. Sex is my devotion. Want open relationships. Am here to date women." Then there is, Mariam dressed in lingerie. Her profile says, "Love to flirt around. Love party. Love men. Love sex." On the other hand, there is a nude picture of Imran, and a topless photo of Angel, with her hands covering her vitals. Her profile says, "Call me for sex"! Talk of setting the monitors on fire…Sex is now so much on these sites, that some people have even given out their contact numbers. Like James who is 28, has made 70 new friends, and has dated more than 30 girls through Orkut. " This site is great. I go out with different girls, and the best is, they don't mind having sex for fun and pleasure." There are many others too, who love taking a ride on this "open-minded culture" wagon.
But, while those who have embraced this new sexual trend seem perfectly convinced and content, experts say that this trend is DANGEROUS. Social-psychologist, Namrata Kaur Ahluwalia says, " This kind of exhibition is an IN thing now. One is at great risk here, especially the ones with their lewd profiles and nude photographs."
Cyber stalking is also a big concern today. A case in this point was that of Sharon (name changed), found her fake profile with morphed pictures going round on one such social networking site. Before she could initiate a legal step, and go any further to collect proofs through print-outs, the profile was deleted. Sharon comments, " One should never post their pictures or personal details.
"So is policing these sites the only solution? " I don't think, that will really be of much help", says psychologist Ishita Chatterjee. " These sites are good, but its bad and sad, if people abuse here. The government and police should keep out of this. Parents and family should control these young. Schools and colleges can also play an important role."Social worker, Sangeet Mehta says, " The net gives freedom and voice to all. Many suppressed issues, find voice here. It's a matter of choice. If you do not like a profile or any information, just avoid it. But the problem that remains, is that with cyber stalking. Law in India is incapable of protecting people. IT sector is dumb. Law enforcers might say that it is a personal issue. But cyber stalking should be looked at as something that can assume a demon-like figure in the years to come."
